Living Locally
News from Transition Charlotte
by Kathy Blume
One of the fun parts of being involved in the Transition Town movement is getting to meet other highly sensitized and action-oriented people working to live more sustainably in the world. And I got to do just that in July when I attended a Transition Town Training in Montpelier (though it would have been a far more alliterative experience in Tunbridge).
An idea emphasized for folks beginning the outreach and awareness-raising necessary to launch such an initiative was the concept that it’s the job of the organizers to both educate their communities about climate change, peak oil and natural resource depletion, while emphasizing what we can collectively DO to address these issues and create a future about which we can be excited.
Fortunately, the opportunity to do all that is here! Transition Charlotte is partnering with Transition Shelburne, Burlington Permaculture and Shelburne Farms to offer an eight-week course called Transition Toolkit: Learning Opportunities For A Sustainable Future.
Each week of the course, based on a theme such as permaculture, home heating or transportation, is divided up into a Thursday evening lecture, a Friday evening movie, and a Saturday hands-on workshop. People can choose to come to any combination of events or sign up for the whole course.
For more information, including event descriptions, pricing, registration, and availability of childcare, you can visit the Transition Shelburne website at greenshelburne.wordpress.com or call Ron Miller at 985-9830.
Transition Charlotte’s next meeting Monday, September 21, 7 p.m. is a dessert potluck at the Charlotte Grange on Spear Street. We will be talking about the formation of Transition Working Groups, as well as our participation in the Vermont 350 Dance Party on October 24. part of an international day of climate action sponsored by the group 350.org.
