Donna Waterman is a figure skater headed to France.
Charlotte’s Donna Waterman is a member of the Vermont Children’s Theatre on Ice (VCTI), a senior figure skating troupe which has been invited by U.S. Figure Skating to represent the United States at the first Nation’s Cup Ballet on Ice competition in Toulouse, France, April 24 and 25. The sport combines the physical aspects of figure skating with a theatrical production. Vermont Children’s Theatre on Ice is the first group of its kind in this country. In the April competition the skaters will face teams from Australia, Belgium, France, Russia, Spain, Switzerland as well as other U.S. teams.

2010 Hoop Fest is another success.
Teams of boys, girls and adults participated in the town Recreation Department’s annual Hoop Fest at Charlotte Central School March 13. Although organizer Deb Stone said the turnout was not quite as large as in past years – she attributed it to competition from UVM tourney games going on at the same time – she was pleased with the results. In addition to teams from Charlotte, South Burlington and Shelburne also sent squads, nearly 20 in all from 4th and 5th graders through middle schoolers and adults. This year’s sponsors included Shelburne Supermarket, Spear’s Corner Store, Dunkin’ Donuts, Hannafords, Price Chopper and Shaws Supermarket.

Spring sports signups are still underway.
Deb Stone says that there are still places available for those interested in taking tennis or golf lessons this spring, and lacrosse for first through sixth graders has openings. If you want to learn the variety of summer camps and programs available, check the website at charlottevt.org. You may also call Deb in the Recreation office at 425-6129 or e-mail recreation@townofcharlotte.com.

Little League baseball tryouts held at Fitness Edge.
Legend held that Little League in Vermont meant challenging the elements. One tried out in a snowstorm, practiced in sleet, and played games in the rain. Physical toughness was a valuable commodity. The early season has changed over the years by moving tryouts indoors. Charlotte Little League (CLL) held them along with open practice last weekend at the Fitness Edge in Williston. Late registration for ages 9-12 ended March 19. However, players in all other divisions may sign up through Friday, April 2. There are eight divisions of Little League in Charlotte beginning with T-Ball for 5-and 6-year-olds. Triple-A division for 7- and 8-year-olds follows with Major and Minor divisions for 9- through 12-year-olds, Babe Ruth League for 13- through 15-year-olds, and the fogies Senior League tops things off. Charlotte is a member of Vermont District 1, serving the towns of Charlotte and Hinesburg.

Who says Game Night isn’t a sporting event?
Heads up, Las Vegas! Spear’s Corner Store is encroaching on your territory. March 12 saw 15 people gathered in the upstairs’ room at Baptist Corners to eat and compete in the third week of Game Night. Buzzword players were a noisy bunch. Bananagram writers, on the other hand, wracked their brains quietly, and the third table seemed equally intent on the food as on the cards. Carrie Spear and Debbie Christie organized the event that they plan to host every few weeks. Contestants are asked to bring their own games along with food to share. In addition to Buzzword and Bananagrams – or “Free Range Scrabble” as Carrie describes it – a Trivia for Dummies box sat unused, lorded over by a pink flamingo. Lighting and decorations produced an atmosphere that befit Charlotte, a warm contrast to the glitz of Nevada’s strip.

Charlotte contributes to a J-2 ski title.
Sienna Searles helped Vermont win the New England Nordic Ski Association’s J-2 Eastern Championships in Jackson, New Hampshire. After three days of skiing, Vermont beat out Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts for the title. The races included boys and girls individually plus relays.

CVU players shine in All-Star Games.
Redhawk basketball star Allison Gannon led the North All-Stars to a convincing 86-47 victory over the South in the annual Division I high school all-star game. On the ice at Essex, CVU’s Sam Parent scored for the Austin Conference all-stars, while his teammate, Mark Albertson, was called upon for 24 saves in goal. The Harris Conference defeated Austin in this annual event sponsored by the Rotary.
